"I Am a Worm": Why Being Offended is a Sign of Spiritual Sleep
King David said, "I am a worm and not a man." Was he depressed? No. He was working. Why sentimentality is the enemy of awakening.
“But I am a worm and not a man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.” (Psalms 22:7)
This is not an Essential Description of Man. It is a Temporary State of Consciousness of the Soul during a time of concealment (Hester), “Smallness” (Katnut), or a descent for the sake of ascent.
Man vs. Worm Man was created in the Image of God (Tzelem Elokim), with the capacity for Attainment and Correction. The feeling of lowliness is not an existential truth; it is a Work Station.
Whoever reads the verse literally and says “Man is a worm” is caught in the word, not the conduct.
The Zohar’s View The Zohar says: “Man (Adam) includes all worlds.” Man is not dust. Man is called Adam because he can resemble (Lehadmot) the Supreme (Elyon). Man is Divine Potential in the making.
The Trap of Sentimentality In Messianic Consciousness, the era of Sentimentality is over. Sentimental Reactions = Conscious Immaturity.
People who do not mature:
Cling to words (”How can you say such a thing?”).
React emotionally, get offended, shrink.
Seek Comfort instead of Understanding. This is the Consciousness of Smallness.
The Consciousness of Maturity In contrast, a mature consciousness asks:
“What is this coming to awaken in me?”
“Where am I asleep inside my own story?”
The work is not “To Feel Good.” The work is To Wake Up to the Essence.
The Mirror of the Worm Man is not a worm. But man is liable to experience himself as a worm when he is disconnected from his destiny.
Whoever stays in the words -> Stays Asleep.
Whoever is willing to wake up -> Passes through the brokenness to the Divine Image.
The Bottom Line This is the whole point here: Do not pet the Ego. Do not get offended. Wake Up.
Whoever gets stuck on the word “Worm” and gets excited or insulted does not understand the Order of the Hour. The Tanya warns that self-abasement which leaves a person passive is a Klipah (Shell), not spiritual work.
The Diagnosis If the word “Worm” touches you and bothers you: It is not about the text. It is about You.
It reveals the “Worm” inside you: Smallness, Fear, or Low Self-Identification.
The call of the hour is clear: Stop clinging to words. Cease petting the ego. And move to Internal Awakening. Only then do we realize the Divine Potential.
Reflect:
The Trigger: If a spiritual teacher yells “Wake up!”, do you say “Thank you” or “Don’t be rude”? Your reaction determines your level.
The Worm: The “Worm” is the part of you that just wants to consume and hide in the dirt. The “Man” is the part that wants to look at the stars. Which one is running your day?
The Shift: Stop looking for a spirituality that makes you feel safe. Look for a spirituality that makes you feel Real.
