IS IT A CALLING OR IS IT JUST BURNOUT?
How to tell the difference between a Divine Signal and an Ego Tantrum.
Student: “I have a dream to leave everything. My kids are out of the house, and I hate my job. I want to quit, even though I have no financial backup, and go on a journey to find silence. But I am terrified. Is this the Soul calling me to a new mission? Or is this just a whim because I am tired and burned out?”
The Diagnostic
This is not a technical question about a plane ticket or a resignation letter. It is a question about Signal Integrity. How do we distinguish between the Will of the Soul and the Fatigue of the System?
Life has seasons. Just as there are seasons in nature, there are seasons in the psyche. When the stage of “Active Motherhood” ends, a vacuum is created. The question is what fills it. If your work no longer fills you, wanting to leave isn’t necessarily an escape. It can be a healthy movement of growth.
The Mechanics of the Shift
According to the Zohar (the 2nd-century Source Code of Kabbalah), the Soul descends to correct specific levels. When a specific level is clarified, the Soul pushes for the next ascent. This feels like Deep Discomfort. It is a restlessness that cannot be solved by a vacation or a raise. It can only be solved by a change in Trajectory.
The Test: Escape vs. Expansion
The Logic of Unity (Hanhagat HaYichud) leads a person on a precise path. But there is a simple test to separate a “Whim” from a “Calling.”
The Root of Intention: Are you asking to run FROM pain, pressure, and a boss you hate? Or are you being pulled TOWARD influence, growth, and connection?
The Will to Receive (Ego) runs away. It seeks comfort.
The Will to Bestow (Soul) expands. It seeks a new way to give.
If you imagine yourself in this new place: Do you see only “Freedom” (lying on a beach)? Or do you see “Connection” (a new way to be of service)? If the picture includes deep giving, it is a Soul movement. If it only includes resting, it is likely just exhaustion.
The Fear Factor
The question is not “Is there fear?” Of course there is fear. Fear belongs to the body. The Soul does not fear. It Knows.
The Soul is not reckless. It is stable, quiet, and deep. The Consistency Test: If the desire returns again and again—even when you are calm, even when you are not angry at your boss, even when there is no emotional trigger—then it is not a momentary glitch. It is a signal.
Geography is not the Cure Redemption is a process of moving from Smallness (Katnut) to Expansion (Gadlut). Sometimes, an external journey is a reflection of an internal one. But be careful. If you travel far, but your Intention remains the same... you haven’t moved an inch. If you change your Intention, you have moved worlds—even if you stay in your living room.
The Three Journeys There are three types of journeys in life:
A journey that expands consciousness.
A journey that numbs pain.
A journey that life forces upon you.
The depth is to identify which one is happening right now. The question isn’t “Should I go?” The question is: “Am I ready to change, even if it requires meeting parts of myself I haven’t met yet?”

ORIYA’S NOTE
We have a fantasy I call “The Geographical Cure.” We think: “If I just quit my job and move to a farm in Portugal / a beach in Thailand / a van in Montana, I will finally be happy.”
We confuse Location with Vibration. We think that if we change the scenery, we will change the self. But as the old saying goes: “Wherever you go, there you are.” If you are miserable and anxious in Ohio, you will eventually be miserable and anxious in Bali—you’ll just have better fruit.
Ruth gives us a brutal diagnostic tool here. I call it The Calmness Test.
Most of us make “Soul Decisions” when we are triggered. Your boss yells at you → “My Soul wants to quit!” Your partner annoys you → “My Soul needs to be single!” That is not your Soul. That is your Nervous System screaming for a break.
The Test: Wait until Saturday morning. Wait until you are rested, fed, and calm. Do you still want to leave? Does the pull feel like a frantic “Get me out of here”? Or does it feel like a quiet, heavy gravity pulling you toward something new?
Panic is fast, loud, and reactive.
Truth is slow, quiet, and relentless.
If you want to run away, take a nap. If you want to build something new, pack your bags.
