Light is Sown, Not Switched On
Why spiritual growth requires darkness. The Ramchal and Baal HaSulam explain that Joy is not a mood, but the signal that the Light has found a home.
“I am working hard spiritually, but I don’t see results. It feels dark. Where is the light?”
“Light is sown for the righteous, and for the upright in heart, joy.” (Psalm 97:11)
This verse is a gateway to a world of internal work and Divine revelation. Notice the word: “Sown” (Zarua).
The Physics of Spiritual Light A seed is not visible light. It is buried in the earth, covered, hidden. It requires time, water, sun, and patience to come into being.
The Ramchal teaches that the Divine Light reserved for the “Tzadik” (Righteous) is not revealed immediately. It is “Sown”. Sealed in the level of the Root of the Soul. Deep in the desire for Adhesion (Dvekut).

Redefining the “Tzadik” The Tzadik is not just the “Perfect Person.” He is the One who Wants Truth. The one who directs his will inward toward his Source.
The “Upright Heart” (Yishrei Lev) Who is the Upright in Heart? The one who has no “curvature” (Akmumiyut). The one who seeks to serve the Creator as He is. Not for the sake of reward. But because it is the Truth of his Soul.
The Process of Sprouting When the heart straightens (aligns) with the Upper Will, it becomes a Vessel for Reception. Then, the “Sown Light” bursts forth as Illumination. As clarity. As an internal understanding that does not come from the outside, but as a Memory of the Soul.
The Zohar says that the Shechina is called “Light,” and the person in his life serves as the “Field.”
If a person cultivates the field with humility, intention, and internality—The Seed will sprout.
But if he remains only on the surface of the ground (external knowledge)—The Wisdom will not ripen.
Joy as a Signal Baal HaSulam (Ashlag) adds that Simcha (Joy) is the sign that the Vessel is full. Joy is not just an emotion. It is Evidence that the Light has found a place to rest.
When a person stops fighting reality and removes the screens of “I,” “I need,” and “I deserve”— The Heart straightens. And the Light that was sown begins to sprout.
The Darkness as Fertilizer This Joy is not the result of external success, but the offspring of Adhesion. It is the transformation of darkness into light. A state where everything that has passed becomes Fertilizer for Growth.
The Instruction: Turn the verse into guidance. Sow seeds of Light every day. Even when you don’t see fruit. Straighten the Heart. Because the Heart is the Vessel.
And when the time comes for the Light to ripen, The Joy will appear on its own. Not as a cause. But as a result. Of the Soul returning to its place.
Reflect:
The Seed: Are you discouraged because you don’t see the tree yet? Remember, you just planted the seed. Don’t dig it up to check if it’s growing.
The Straightness: “Yashar” means straight. Is your heart straight with God, or is it twisted with agendas (”I’ll be good so You give me money”)? Straighten the line.
The Joy: Stop chasing joy. Chase Alignment. Joy is just the exhaust fume of a soul on fire.
