How a "Pure Soul" can commit unspeakable evil
The Split
In the Secret Wisdom, there is a sharp distinction between the Essence of the Soul and the Actions of the Man.
The Soul, at its root, is a Divine Spark. A “Part of the Divine from Above.”
This root is pure in every person, whoever they are.
But from the moment the Soul dresses in a body...
In the Animal Soul (Nefesh Behemit).
In the Instincts.
In a corrupted consciousness.
The human being can behave with extreme evil.
This choice does not stem from the purity of the Soul.
It stems from Concealment.
From the Klipot (The Shells).
From the disconnection from the Root.
The Captive
The Tanya (The foundational text of Chabad) speaks of the fact that even a completely wicked person has a Godly Soul.
But it is in Absolute Exile. It is held captive under the rule of the Instinct and the Shell.
The Zohar (The Book of Splendor) describes a soul that is “Prisoner” within the husks.
The Source of Evil
The Baal HaSulam (The modern giant of Kabbalah) explains:
The Will to Receive is not evil in itself.
But when it operates “In order to receive for itself alone”—in total disconnection from influence and responsibility—it becomes the Source of Evil.
Therefore, to say the Soul is pure does not mean the Man is pure in his deeds.
It means the Divine Root exists, but it is covered so deeply that the person acts as if there is no Light in them at all.
The Three Layers
We must hold a complexity that is hard for the mind to bear:
The Root Level: The Soul is Divine and Pure.
The Psycho-Spiritual Level: There is an Animal Soul, Instincts, Shells, and Concealment.
The Moral-Practical Level: The Human is absolutely responsible.
The Ramchal (The 18th-century Italian Architect) explains that Evil is not an independent entity.
It is the Absence of Revelation of Good.
When a person commits an extreme act of harm, they are acting out of an extreme concealment of the Light.
But the Concealment is not the Light itself.
Responsibility
The fact that the Soul is pure at the root does not reduce responsibility by a single gram.
Choice was given to the human precisely because there is a point of Light that could have chosen differently.
When he chooses severe evil, he is fully liable.
If we mix the layers, we create moral confusion.
If we say “The Soul is Pure” to justify a crime Fatal Error.
If we say “He did Evil, so his Essence is Evil” Denial of Creation.
The Purpose of the Spark
The knowledge that even a fallen man has a root of Light is not intended to soften the judgment.
It is intended to explain why Correction (Tikkun) is possible at all.
Without a root of Light, there would be no possibility of Return (Teshuvah).
But the possibility of Return does not remove the obligation to protect the victims, to prosecute, and to set clear boundaries.

ORIYA’S NOTE
We want monsters to be monsters.
We want the rapist, the abuser, and the tyrant to be made of 100% pure darkness.
Because if they are pure darkness, they are not like us. They are a different species.
Kabbalah refuses to give us that comfort.
It says: “The Monster has the same battery as the Saint.”
Imagine a nuclear power plant.
The energy at the core is pure physics. It is neutral. It is powerful.
If the containment vessel is strong, it lights up a city.
If the containment vessel cracks, it melts down and destroys everything for 100 miles.
The energy didn’t change. The Vessel broke.
When a human being commits evil, it is not because their “Battery” (The Soul) is evil.
It is because their “Interface” (The Ego/The Animal) has hijacked the system.
They are running High Voltage through a corrupted circuit.
This is not an excuse.
If a nuclear reactor melts down, we don’t say, “Aww, but the uranium was so pure!”
No. We seal it in concrete. We protect the population. We judge the negligence.
But we must understand the mechanics.
Evil is not a “Thing.” Evil is a Glitch.
It is what happens when the Will to Receive disconnects from the Network.
Don’t hug the reactor. But understand the physics.
