The Fine Line Between Healer and Idolater
I healed him." No, you didn't. Ruth Kedem explains the spiritual laws of being a channel (Tzinor), the trap of the ego, and the truth about charging money for spirituality.
THE PRINCIPLE OF THE CHANNEL There is no fundamental prohibition against a person being a channel for strengthening, healing, or comforting others. The Condition: As long as he does not attribute independent power to himself, nor to an object, a stone, or an action.
Defining “Idolatry” (Avoda Zara) Idolatry does not begin with an action (bowing down). It begins in Consciousness. The moment a person thinks:
“I am the Source.”
“This crystal works by itself.”
“I promise this result.” —That is where the deviation begins.
But when a person experiences themselves as a Messenger only—as someone through whom Good might awaken, attributing everything solely to the Will of God—this is not Idolatry. It is Human Mission within the framework of Faith.
The Zohar speaks of people who awaken Mercy in the world not because they have “Power,” but because they are Open, Refined, and do not block the Flow (Shefa).
The Ramchal emphasizes that the Divine Light is always acting, but it does not clothe itself in man as an independent power. It passes through him according to the purity of the Vessel. Man is never a Source. Man is a Place of Revelation.
As long as there is no identification with “I am the Healer,” but an internal knowing of “If there is something here, it is not mine,” there is no problem of faith.
The Myth of “Energy Exchange” (Payment) Regarding payment: The common saying that “Without money, you lose energy” is not Jewish. In Judaism, there is room for totally free giving in spiritual matters—strengthening, prayer, and comfort—provided the giver is not worn out, emptied, or losing boundaries.
The prohibition is not against Free Giving. The prohibition is against Destructive Self-Sacrifice. A messenger is not required to break himself to transmit good. A Cracked Vessel is not a Holy Vessel.
If the giving happens naturally—without initiative, without advertising, without promises, and without creating dependency—and the internal feeling is one of Quiet, Joy, and Flow (not emptiness or burden), then there is no obligation to take payment, and there is no spiritual damage in giving for free.
Success is Not Proof Judaism warns not to measure spiritual truth by external results. The fact that someone got stronger, calmed down, or found direction is not proof of your personal power. It is proof, at most, that a space opened up within them. The person’s responsibility is only for the Cleanliness of Intention, not for the Result.
The Protection The most precise spiritual protection in this situation is a constant internal stance: “If there is Good here—let it come from God alone. And if not—let me not be a vessel for a thing that is not His.”
Thus, the person remains:
A Channel (Tzinor), not a Source.
A Messenger, not a Power Holder.
Open, yet Protected.
Giving, yet not a Victim.
