The Great Unfolding
What is the Order of Unfolding (Seder Hishtalshelut)?
The Order of Unfolding is the process by which the infinite divine light—
which is simple, whole, unified, and imperceptible—
contracts and clothes itself, stage after stage,
in order to create a reality in which created beings can come to know the Creator from within themselves.
This is the “path” by which the Infinite descends and enclothes itself
until a physical reality appears, in which it seems the light has vanished.
But in truth, it is concealed within everything.
The Main Stages of the Unfolding:
The Infinite (Ein Sof): The absolute reality of simple light in which there is no distinction at all. Only absolute good, a unity with no limit or separateness.
The Contraction (Tzimtzum): To allow created beings to exist and to choose, the light seemingly withdraws, and a “vacant space” is formed—a place where the feeling of a separate “I” is possible. This is the root of all created beings.
The Line (Kav): A thin line of light from the Infinite enters the vacant space and begins to illuminate it gradually, building worlds according to the capacity of their vessels. This is the root of the illumination within the concealment.
The Four Worlds (Atzilut, Beriah, Yetzirah, Assiah):
Atzilut (Emanation) – The light is almost entirely divinity. There is no separateness here.
Beriah (Creation) – The beginning of the feeling of a created entity.
Yetzirah (Formation) – The revelation of the soul’s powers, emotions, movement.
Assiah (Action) – The world of action, matter, time, and space.
These worlds are not places, but states of consciousness of proximity to and distance from the divine light.
The Purpose of the Order of Unfolding
The purpose is not to “descend downward,”
but for us to return by ascending from below upward.
The soul descended all the way to the world of Assiah
in order to discover the light that was concealed,
and thus to attain the light from a place of knowing, not from instinct.
As the Ramchal writes:
“The Creator lacks nothing; rather, His will is to bestow good, and the most complete good is when a person receives the light through their own labor and effort.”
And Baal HaSulam adds:
The purpose of creation is “to bring to light the perfection of His actions, His names, and His appellations,” from potential to actuality.
In Mashiach Consciousness – The Order of Unfolding becomes the Order of Ascent.
Every descent is perceived as a preparation for the revelation of a greater light.
The soul learns to see that everything is one.
The contraction is a revelation.
The concealment is an illumination.
And the separateness is a vessel for unity.
When a soul attains this,
it lives the “completion of the rectification” (gemar ha’tikkun).
There is nothing outside the Creator,
and every world is a garment for His light.
Reflect:
Can you feel these different “worlds” in your own consciousness—moments of pure unity (Emanation), creative ideas (Creation), emotions (Formation), and physical action (Action)?
Where in your life do you feel you are in “descent” or concealment? Can you reframe this as a necessary preparation for revealing a greater light?
What would it mean to live your life not as a descent from God, but as a conscious return to God?
