THE MIRROR OF LEADERSHIP
Transitioning from the reactive "face of the dog" to the sovereignty of internal truth.
The Anatomy of the Lead-Follower
The classical descriptions of the “Footsteps of the Messiah” portray a specific structural decay: “Insolence will increase, truth will be absent, and the face of the generation will be like the face of a dog.” This is a precise mechanical definition of leadership that has lost its connection to the Root. Just as a dog runs ahead of its master but constantly looks back to see which way the master is turning, modern leadership appears to lead while actually being dragged by the masses—reactive to public opinion, fear, and narrow interests. This represents a total surrender of internal Truth to the power of external reception.
The Ego as an Administrative System
The Zohar explains that prior to the final correction, forces known as the Erev Rav (Mixed Multitude) rise to positions of influence. These are systems that present themselves as serving the collective good but are internally driven by egoism and a desire for control. According to the Ramchal, this intensification of “Concealment” allows the underlying “Evil” (self-reception) to reveal its full potency so that it can finally be clarified and dissolved. Baal HaSulam notes that any system built on self-reception is structurally destined for corruption, oppression, and suffering, as it functions in direct opposition to the Divine nature of Bestowal.
The Sovereignty of Personal Rectification
The most profound insight from the sources is that leadership is not an isolated phenomenon; it is a macroscopic reflection of the generation’s consciousness. “The face of the generation is like the face of a dog” describes a collective state where individuals are driven by fear and self-interest. Redemption is not a change in government, but a structural shift in consciousness from “Self-Reception” to “Bestowal.”
The Tanya suggests that when the external world becomes overwhelming or deceptive, it is often necessary to guard the “vessels” of the eyes and the mind. The goal is not to abolish the world, but to refuse to let the world abolish you. When an individual anchors themselves in internal Truth and repairs their own desires, they exert a technical influence on the collective whole. Ultimate leadership will eventually emerge as a reflection of a corrected consciousness—not a force imposed from above, but a natural expression of an internal alignment with the One.
