The Script is Written, The Actor is Free
You cannot change the events, but you can change whether they are a prison or a ladder. The resolution of the Paradox.
“I am confused. We know everything is Divine Providence and known in advance. So, is my Free Will simply ‘to decide to see and know this’? Do I have the ability to change reality? If it’s known in advance, where do I fit in?”
The Secret is This:
Reality as an “Edit” is known in advance.
But the Experience, the Recognition, and the Equivalence of Form are not.
The Ramchal explains that the Creator determined the order of governance:
The general trajectory of the soul,
The encounters,
The times,
The situations.
In this sense—there is no surprise.
There is no “changing the script.”
What is NOT known in advance?
In what Rung (spiritual level) will you meet what has already been determined?
And that is the entire difference.
Free Will Is Not:
To choose a different reality.
To change fate.
To create an alternative world.
Free Will Is:
Do you meet what comes out of Concealment (Hester) or out of Revelation (Gilui)?
Meaning:
The same event can be Suffering or Correction.
The same relationship can be a Prison or a Gate.
The same reality can be experienced as Coercion or as Providence.
Does Reality Change?
The reality itself does not change.
You change in relation to it.
And therefore, you ask justly:
“So is the choice only ‘to see and know’?”
The deep answer is: Yes.
But it is not “Only.”
“To Know” (Lada’at) in the Kabbalistic sense is not intellectual knowledge.
It is Da’at (Connecting Knowledge).
It is an internal connection between:
Will $\leftrightarrow$ Understanding $\leftrightarrow$ Acceptance $\leftrightarrow$ Equivalence of Form.
When a person “Knows” in this way,
he does not change the movie,
But he exits the captivity of the movie.
The Source of Confusion
People think that if everything is known in advance, they are meaningless.
And this is a mistake.
The meaning of a person is not in what happens to him,
but in what Vessel he becomes opposite what happens to him.
This is the reason everything is in Concealment.
To allow the person to discover.
Not to choose externally,
but to align internally.
When a person reaches a level of deep agreement with Providence,
it looks like reality changes.
But actually, he rose a level within the same reality.
Therefore people say: “When I understood, everything worked out.”
No.
They worked out with what was already there.
The Summary:
You are touching the place where ordinary language breaks.
We have no choice over what will arrive.
We have a deep choice over how we will be opposite what arrives.
Providence determines the Road.
The Person determines if he walks it with eyes closed or eyes open.
And that is not a small thing.
That is the whole Work.
Take your time.
Your question stems from a ripe place.
Reflect:
The Event: Think of a difficult “Script” in your life right now (an illness, a financial struggle). You didn’t write it.
The Choice: You can play the role of the “Victim” or the “Student.” The script stays the same, but the genre of the movie changes from Tragedy to Hero’s Journey.
The Relief: Does knowing you don’t have to “Manifest Reality” but only “Align with Reality” make you feel trapped, or free?
