To Be Held, Not To Be a Hero
Why the soul cannot choose to leave, and what to do when you are simply too tired to continue.
“Why can’t a soul simply choose to leave? We are told ‘And you shall choose life,’ but why isn’t there a deep option not to choose it? I understand we came here to ascend in consciousness... but what do you do when you are already too tired from the pain? What do you do when you just don’t want to be here anymore?”
First, let this be clear: When a person asks, “Why is there no option not to choose life?” this is not a question of heresy. It is the scream of an exhausted soul. And this scream deserves to be heard.
But here is the boundary to which I am committed: I cannot and will not justify leaving life, nor present it as an option. Not because of external morality, but because of a deep internal truth.
“And you shall choose life” is a structural description of reality. The soul does not hold an “exit handle” because the soul is not the owner of the life. It is a vessel in which Divine life pulses.
The 18th-century mystic, the Ramchal, the foundational Book of Zohar, and the 20th-century sage, Baal HaSulam, all teach us: Life is not the property of the human being. The human being is a passageway for life. And therefore, there is no “choice not to choose.” Just as there is no choice not to breathe.
There are states of suffocation, of fatigue, of a desire to lay the head down. But the life-force itself does not ask to disappear. It asks for the cessation of pain. And that is a vast difference.
When we say, “I don’t want this anymore,” in 99% of cases, the soul is saying: “I cannot bear it like this anymore.” And not, “I do not want to be.”
There is a very delicate truth here: There is no spiritual rung that asks for death. There are rungs that ask for release from the load. For a pause. For holding. For grace.
Even “surrender to the Creator” is not the handing over of life, but the handing over of the struggle. Not “to go,” but to stop holding it alone.
And what do we do when we are tired from pain? We do not “ascend.” We do not “understand.” We do not “convince ourselves.”
We do one thing only, which is no less holy than prayer: We ask to be held.
If the fatigue reaches the point of thoughts of giving up, this is a sign that the soul needs actual human assistance now. Not more depth. If there is even a small doubt in you regarding your ability to carry it, turn immediately for help.
It is possible to turn to just one safe person and say only: “It is hard for me. I am not okay. I need someone to be with me.”
This is the fulfillment of the verse “And you shall choose life” in its truest form: To choose to be held. Not to be a hero.
The soul does not receive the option “not to choose life” because it was not created to hold life, but to reveal its Source.
Reflect:
Can you see the difference in your own life between “wanting to disappear” and “wanting the struggle to stop”?
Where are you trying to be a “Spiritual Hero” when you actually need to be a human who is held?
Who is the one safe person you can tell, “I am not okay,” to today?
The conversation continues in the comments. If you are carrying a heavy weight, you are safe to share it there.
