When Crisis Is a Shortcut
How is it that a person who awakens and does subtle inner work suddenly experiences a medical event? Was it supposed to be worse, and they received mercy?
The overall perspective is that everything that happens to a person is part of the mechanism of purification and the elevation of the soul.
When a person awakens and does subtle inner work, it is precisely then that places within them that still need rectification are revealed.
The event is a gentle call from Heaven
to open another layer of trust,
to release another barrier,
and to connect to the root of the divine life-force.
Sometimes, in place of a more difficult experience (emotional, physical, or material), the medical event arrives like a “shortcut”—a kind of judgment sweetened with mercy.
The Ramchal teaches in “The Way of God” and “Adir BaMarom” that everything that comes to a person is part of a precise order of Providence. There are judgments that could have been revealed in much harsher forms, but when the person is already on a path of inner return, the judgment is clothed in a constriction (for example, a temporary illness or weakness) instead of a devastating crisis. In this, the “constriction of the judgment” is fulfilled. Providence lessens the blow to allow the person to continue their work and not be broken.
“Sufferings of Love”: The Baal HaTanya explains that there are “sufferings of love.” They do not come to atone for sins, but to purify the vessels so that the soul can contain more light. When a person is doing subtle work, the final klipot (shells/husks) cling to them, and the medical event serves as a tool to peel off this layer. It is a “cleansing” that allows for a spiritual leap afterward. The very fact that the person survived, and that it happened in a limited, medical way and not as a disaster, is already a great mercy.
The Zohar – “The Sweetening of Judgments”: The Holy Zohar says that when a person draws near to the light, the judgments that were awaiting them are awakened, but their inner work sweetens them. The medical event is the appearance of a judgment that has already been sweetened. Instead of a severe blow or a loss, it is expressed in a measured event that directs the person toward greater dvekut (cleaving to God). The Zohar compares this to a father who loves his son and therefore gives him a “light tap with a stick” instead of a harsh blow.
Baal HaSulam – “Recognition of the Evil and Revelation of the Vessel”: Baal HaSulam explains that in order to reveal a new light, a person must recognize the lack (the vessel). Sometimes, the medical event reveals the weakness in the body so that the soul will recognize its lack of a firm grip on physicality and will strengthen itself in self-nullification and trust in the light. It serves as a means to expand the vessel. The event served to reveal an empty place that is destined to be filled with a greater light.
When a person who is awakening suddenly experiences an event,
it is a judgment that has been sweetened with mercy.
The event is only...
A reminder of the body’s fragility.
A kindness that prevented a greater disaster.
A rectification that softens future judgments.
Yes, it could have been much, much worse, and the supernal mercy “clothed” it in the form of a medical hint in order to continue leading the person on their journey toward the completion of their rectification.
Reflect:
Can you look back at a past crisis or health challenge and see it not as a punishment, but as a “sweetened judgment” or a “shortcut” on your spiritual path?
When facing a difficulty, what would change if you saw it as a call from Heaven to release another barrier and open to a deeper level of trust?
What “final husks” or resistances might a current challenge be helping you to peel away, in order to make you a vessel for greater light?
