Why the Soul Needs a Body to Love God
Angels cannot truly love, because they cannot say "No." Why true Adhesion (Dvekut) requires the distance, friction, and fatigue of the physical world.
“Why does the soul have to suffer in this world? If it comes from the Infinite Light, why send it down to the darkness?”
1. PSHAT (The Simple Level) The soul is sent to the world not because it lacks Light, but because here, inside a body and time, it can Choose the Light, not just be full of it. The Correction (Tikun) belongs to the Human and his Vessel, not to the Creator or the Soul itself.
2. DRASH (The Homiletic Level) The descent to the world is a Mission. The soul descends to a place of Concealment (Hester), struggles, and mistakes, in order to turn External Knowledge into Internal Truth. Truth is acquired through toil. Therefore, every difficulty is a Call for Precision.
3. REMEZ (The Hint Level) “Descent for the sake of Ascent.” The lack, the confusion, and the breakage hint at a Greater Light seeking to be revealed through them. The more the vessel undergoes refinement (Zikuch), the more it is capable of carrying a deeper and more delicate Light.
4. SOD (The Secret Level) The soul was included in the Infinite Light without separation. Therefore, it was without Adhesion (Dvekut).
The Constriction (Tzimtzum) and Concealment created the possibility of a Separate “I.”
From separation, an “As-If” Choice is born.
From Choice, a Living Adhesion is born.
Not Light filling a passive vessel, but Light passing through an Independent Will and revealing itself in the world.
The Paradox of the Body Adhesion is possible only through a Body. Not because the body is higher than the soul, but because Dvekut is not a state of Light, but a Relationship.
And a relationship can only exist where there is:
Separation.
Friction.
Concealment.
And Choice.
All these exist only in a body, inside a world of Time and Action.
The Soul Without a Body: It is close to the Light. It knows. It is included. But it is not in Active Adhesion. There is no resistance there. No temptation. No fatigue. There is no “No.” Therefore, there is also no “Yes” that is chosen.
Adhesion that does not stand against the possibility of separation is not Adhesion.
The Distance Creates the Will The Body creates Distance. The Distance creates Will (Ratzon). The Will allows for Contemplation, Observation, Closeness, and Adhesion.
The Way is the Heart of Adhesion. Therefore, it is said: “The Action is the Main Thing.” Not because the external act is more important than the intention, but because the Deed is the place where Light and Matter truly meet.
Any talk of Dvekut without a body remains at the level of abstract attainment. Only in the body does it become a Living Bond.
In the body, one can get tired and still choose.
In the body, one can make a mistake and still align.
In the body, one can feel no Light and still remain faithful.
And THAT is Dvekut. Not a merger that erases the human. But a connection that exists despite being human.
Reflect:
The Fatigue: When you are tired and spiritual work feels hard—rejoice. That resistance is the friction required to create the fire of love. Angels don’t get tired; that’s why they can’t love like you.
The “No”: Every time you feel the urge to say “No” to God/Light/Goodness, it is an opportunity to generate a real “Yes.”
The Distance: Do you feel far from God? Good. “The Body creates Distance; Distance creates Will.” Use the distance to generate yearning.
