Your Grandmother is Not an Angel (She is Something Else)
Why angels are not people with wings, but "Forces of Mission." Understanding the spiritual mechanics of feeling watched over by a loved one.
“I feel my late grandmother watching over me like an angel. Is she really there? How do angels work?”
Angels are not independent entities acting on their own will. They are Forces of Conduct of the Creator. They are Garments of Will and Providence.
The Definition of an Angel The Zohar and the Ramchal clarify that an angel is a Mission (Shlichut). It is not a separate personality with free will. It is a specific frequency of Divine energy sent to perform a specific task.
The Vision of the Loved One Therefore, when a person experiences the figure of a deceased relative as an “angel”: It does not mean that the specific soul descended to manage your life as a separate entity. It means that Divine Providence clothed itself in a familiar, loving, and soothing image that your psyche could contain.
Direct Supervision Baal HaSulam emphasizes that the Creator supervises directly. Not through intermediaries in the human sense (like a middleman). However, this supervision is revealed through forces (angels) according to the state of the person’s Vessel.
The Experience The experience you had—boundless love, security, protection—does not testify to a “visit from an angel” in the simplistic sense. It testifies to the opening of an internal Vessel to the line of Grace (Chessed) and Providence. Your soul interpreted this high frequency through the image of your grandmother because that is the language your heart speaks.
Is it Real? Yes. It is healthy, natural, and well-known in the secret writings. As long as you understand: The Source of the safety is the Creator. The Image is just the Garment. Do not cling to the image; cling to the Source.
What is Providence (Hashgacha)? Providence means No Accidents. Everything revealed to a person is meant to:
Align them.
Strengthen them.
Or calm them on the path of Correction.
It is not a promise of immunity from difficulty. It is a promise of Precise Accompaniment on the soul’s journey.
Reflect:
The Source: When you feel protected, thank the Creator. He is the one sending the “hug,” even if it feels like Grandma’s arms.
The Image: Don’t get hung up on seeing wings or halos. Spiritual forces dress in whatever form you can handle.
The Trust: “Providence means no accidents.” Repeat this when you feel alone. You are being walked home.
